The total area of the protected territories in Georgia is 520.272,85 hectares comprising 7% of the total territory of the country. 75% of the protected areas are covered with forests. According to IUCN categories, at present there are 16 Strict Nature Reserves, 10 National Parks, 18 Managed Nature Reserves, 24 Natural Monuments and 2 Protected Landscapes in Georgia. The first protected area, the Lagodekhi Strict Nature Reserve, was established in 1912.
Protected areas are of particular significance in tourism development. Kobuleti (Ispani peatlands) and Kintrishi Protected Areas, Mtirala National Park and Machakhela Transboundary Protected Area play an important part in supporting and enhancing Georgia’s unique biodiversity and maintenance of ecological balance. Each place is characterized by ecotourist potential with available aquatic, ethnological and birdwatching tours. There are 4 protected areas in Ajara.
