Keda Municipality

Makhuntseti village, Makhuntseti Waterfall

Keda Municipality is situated at the mid reaches of the river Acharistskali. From the north it borders Kobuleti (length of the border - 38 km.); from the east Shuakhevi (length of the border - 24 km.); from the west Khelvachauri (length of the border - 24 km.); and from the south it shares a 17-km border with Turkey. The Shavsheti Range stretches southwards from the Keda region whereas the Meskheti Range runs to the northeast and the Kobuleti Range runs to the northwest.

Total area of Keda Municipality is 452 sq. km. Population 21,2 thousand. There are 10 city councils and 64 villages within the municipality. The administrative center is the town of Keda at 200 m above sea level. The highest peak is Kanli at 2.987 m.

Tourists often visit Keda to see the Makhuntseti Waterfall. Nearby they can enjoy restaurants and picnic spots.

The population is mainly occupied with a range of agricultural activities including the growing fruits and vegetables, vineyards, and bee keeping. There are also trout fisheries in the villages of Oktomberi, Agara, Tsoniarisi and Tskhmorisi.

The municipality is rich in various natural resources including copper and gold deposits as well as medicinal and mineral waters. As a medical and mineral water "Kokotauri" and "Gundauri" are the most famous. The region boasts that the specific medicinal mineral water "Kokotauri" has been granted an international certificate.

The climate in this region is subtropical. As the altitude along the Acharistskali River increases, the humidity increases as well.

On the territory of the municipality in the Acharistkali and mountain rivers` gorge it is possible to see diverse types of flora and fauna, as well as waterfall and diverse vegetation. Mainly there is spread deciduous and coniferous plants. Animal world is also very diverse.
