Georgian folklore is one of the best expressions of the Georgian identity. There are hardly any other countries preserving their folklore traditions so proudly. Every region of Georgia is represented by characteristic dances and polyphonic songs that showcase the diversity and originality of the culture. Folklore traditions in Ajara have been evident since ancient times, proved by the Ajarian musical instruments preserved to this day, including the chonguri, panduri, drums, bagpipe, pipe, and chiboni. Ajarian folklore is a distinguished part of the Georgian musical heritage including such famous folk songs as “Ohoi, nana” and “Ajaruli.” Concerts of old folk songs are held during public festivals such as Shuamtoba, Kolkhoba, and Tbeloba. Songs and dances are based mostly on battle and feasting themes. Ajarian dance is distinguished by its origins, movement, and character. The dances “Khorumi” and “Ajaruli” are famous all over the world. Ajarian traditional clothes are also characterized by their originality.
