Kintrishi Protected Areas are located in the breathtaking gorge of the Kintrishi, in Kobuleti region on 2.500 m above the sea level and cover the Kintrishi Strict Nature Reserve (10.703 ha) and Kintrishi Protected Landscape (3.190 ha). Kintrishi gorge is located between Tskhemlovani and Khino mountains.
Kintrishi Protected Areas are characterized by complex and diverse relief. Most of the territory is occupied by mountains and gorges. Mountainous relief is covered by a deep gorge.
Vegetation of Kintrishi protected areas is biologically diversified mainly preconditioned by variety of natural conditions of growing and development (relief, air, soil and so on). The main area, about 92% (12.850 ha) is covered with forest.
Here flow the rivers Kintrishi and Kheknara. The rivers and springs on the protected area provide animals and birds with water. An oval shaped lake "Tbikeli" is located on 1.900-2.000 m above the sea level and is fed by precipitation, ground water and melted snow. The maximum depth of the lake is 8-10 meters. Caucasian triton - the aquatic species included into the Georgian "Red List" - can only be found in "Tbikeli".
The Reserve is rich in such species of the Colchis flora as: Eastern beech, chestnut, Eastern spruce, Medvedev birch, black alder, elm, ash, Caucasian persimmon, mountain maple, relict rhododendron ungernii, etc.
The Colchis box-tree - Bucsus colchica - represents a valuable flora species of Kolkheti. Its height is 15-16 m, diameter 16-32 cm, and its age can be up to 250 years. Taxus baccata - yew-tree - the ancient species of the tertiary period is also included into the "Red List" of Georgia.
In terms of fauna, the following animals can be found in the Kintrishi Protected Area: chamois, roe, bear, jackal, wolf, lynx, marten, badger, squirrel and many others.
HISTORICAL - CULTURAL VALUE
The monument from the Rustaveli epoch’ is the name of the arched bridge over the river Kintrishi connecting the ancient Khino-Kobuleti road. This construction belongs to the most famous flowering of Georgian culture during the eleventh and twelfth centuries CE.
